Rosemary Flower Botanical Features and Agriculture

Latin: Rosmarinus officinalis L.
Local Names: Dew of the Sea, Sea Dew, Elf Leaf,
English Name: Rosemary

Botanical Features:

Rosemary, which belongs to the Lamiaceae family, grows in countries located in the Mediterranean region.

In Turkey, it spreads naturally in Adana, Mersin and Antalya. Rosemary is a perennial, semi-woody and shrubby herb. Depending on the season and temperature, it blooms in magenta colors close to blue from the beginning of spring.

In many branched plants, the height varies between 80-120 cm. It has green colored and distinctive elongated leaves. The rosemary plant is green throughout the year. It does not shed its leaves in winter and the above-ground parts do not dry out.

Agriculture:

The rosemary plant is not cultivated in our country. It is an important essential oil plant. It can also be cultivated in dry agricultural areas without irrigation facilities. However, heavy soils that hold a lot of water are not suitable for the cultivation of this plant. The production in the rosemary plant is practically made with steel. Seedlings obtained from cuttings planted in rooting medium are planted in the field in March-April in spring or in October-November in autumn. Planting density can be made as 70x20 or 100x20. Approximately 5000-7000 seedlings are planted per decare. In irrigated areas, approximately 600 kg of leaf yield per decare can be obtained, and 300 kg of leaf yield in dry conditions.

Content and Active Ingredients:

Rosemary leaves contain essential oil. The amount of essential oil varies between 1-3%. The main component of the essential oil is 1,8-cineole and its ratio is between 40-60%. Rosemary extract also contains rosmarinic acid, borneol, cineole, camphor, genkwanin, luteolin, diosmetin, carnasol and rosmanol.
