It naturally spreads in moist stream beds, field edges, pastures and meadows. St. John\'s wort plant is distinguished from other St. John\'s wort species by its leaves and flowers.

Compounds such as hypericin and pseudohypericin are the characteristic components of the plant constituting 0.05-0.3%. In addition, the plant contains 0.9-5.0% of hyperforin and adhyperforin and about 4% of various flavonoid derivative compounds.
