Glycyrrhiza glabra, commonly known as Liquorice Root, is a perennial plant belonging to the Fabaceae family. This plant has an important place in both the medical and food industry thanks to the sweet and beneficial components obtained from its roots. The leaves of the liquorice plant are compound and each leaflet is oval and bright green in colour. The leaves usually have 9 to 17 small leaflets. The flowers are small, purplish-blue or pale purple and borne in panicles. The flowers bloom in summer and are very attractive. The fruits of the liquorice plant are thin, long and hairy pods. Each pod contains several seeds. The most important part of the plant, the roots, are thick and woody. The roots contain the compound glycyrrhizin, which has a sweet flavour and is known for its various health benefits.  Glycyrrhiza glabra prefers moist and well-drained soils. It grows well in temperate and warm climates. It grows more efficiently in sunny areas.
