Gypsophila paniculata is a fascinating plant species with its elegant and delicate appearance. This plant, which attracts attention with its slender and branched stems, can reach a height of 30 to 90 cm. The stems are greyish-green in colour and have a hairy texture. The leaves are usually lanceolate, greyish and small. The most striking feature of the plant is the large number of tiny flowers. The flowers are usually white or pink in colour and range from 3 to 5 mm in diameter. These delicate flowers with five petals give the plant a feathery and cloud-like appearance. It is drought resistant and easy to maintain.
It prefers to grow in well-drained, sandy and rocky soils. It likes sunny environments and can adapt to arid conditions. The root system is highly developed and penetrates deeply into the soil, helping the plant to maintain a strong hold. In this way, it can easily grow even in windy and rocky areas. Roots grow up to 1-2 m in suitable soil conditions. It has a pile root system and is very robust and strong.
Gypsophila paniculata occurs naturally in parts of Europe and Asia. However, it is widely cultivated worldwide as an ornamental plant. It is frequently used in gardens, parks and flower arrangements. It is also favoured as decoration for wedding bouquets and other special occasions.
Major Active Ingredients and Proportions
The plant is characterised by its rich composition and is a particularly important source of saponins
The roots and above-ground parts of the plant may contain 10-20% saponins.
These saponins include gipenosides, quilayasaponarins and gypsogenin.
In addition, flavonoids are also present in 5-10% of the Baby’s Breath.
These flavonoids include compounds with antioxidant properties such as kempferol, quercetin and isoramnetin. Triterpenoids are also found in Baby’s Breath and include compounds such as gypsogenic acid and oleanolic acid. These triterpenoids can be found in 1-5% and may have anti-inflammatory properties.
