Lemon balm is an aromatic herb from the Lamiaceae family and is commonly known as "Lemon Balm Extract". Originating from Europe, it is found naturally in the Mediterranean basin and Western Asia.
Lemon balm is characterised by its heart-shaped, toothed leaves and small, white flowers that bloom in summer. The leaves are so named because they emit a strong lemon odour when torn. The height of melissa usually ranges from 30-90 cm and, as a perennial, it is widely cultivated in gardens and in its natural habitat. The plant is relatively easy to grow; it prefers sunny or semi-shaded areas and well-drained, slightly moist soils are ideal. Because of its distinctive aroma and positive effects on health, lemon balm is often used in teas, perfumery and aromatherapy. Lemon balm extract is particularly favoured for its relaxing properties against stress and insomnia. Thanks to its antioxidant, antiviral and antimicrobial properties, it has a wide range of health and beauty applications. This plant, whose botanical name is Melissa officinalis, has become a valuable extract often used in medicinal and cosmetic products.
