Thyme extract is a plant species belonging to the Origanum genus of the Lamiaceae family. It spreads naturally in Turkey, especially in the Aegean, Marmara and Western Mediterranean Regions. Thyme extract, which is perennial and herbaceous, blooms from region to region in the period of May-June. The length of Thyme extract, which has many branches, varies between 50-90 cm. The stem and leaf parts of the thyme plant are hairy. Its leaves are green in color and have light white veins on the leaves. During the winter, the upper part of the Thyme extract dries up, new shoots are given in the spring and branching and flowering occurs.
Since thyme species contain essential oils, they have a characteristic odor. The amount of this essential oil is around 3-4% in oregano extract. The main component of the essential oil is mostly carvacrol and its ratio is between 70-80%. There are also chemotypes containing thymol. Thyme extract also contains compounds such as γ-terpinene, apigenin, diosmetin, luteolin, rosmarinic acid, caffeic acid. Thyme essential oil has strong antibacterial, antiseptic, antispasmodic, carminative, cholagogue, diaphoretic, emmenagogue, expectorant and stimulating effects due to the carvacrol and thymol molecules it contains.
