Peppermint  (Mentha piperita) is a perennial herb belonging to the mint family Lamiaceae, known for its intensely aromatic properties. This plant, which usually grows in humid and shady areas, attracts attention with both medicinal and culinary uses. Peppermint leaves are green, lance-shaped and slightly toothed at the edges. The leaves are rich in essential oils, which contain the plant's characteristic menthol odour. Peppermint flowers bloom in summer and are purplish or pink in colour and small in size. The flowers are in panicles at the top of the stems. The stems of the plant are erect, four-cornered and hairy. The stem structure is one of the distinguishing features of the plant. Peppermint spreads by horizontal roots called rhizomes, and these roots enable the plant to spread rapidly. Mentha piperita prefers moist and well-drained soils. It grows best in sunny or semi-shady areas. It shows a rapid growth especially in spring and summer.
