Rose, scientifically Rosa damascena, is a perennial plant of the Rosaceae family, known for its fragrant flowers. Originating from the Middle East, it is widely cultivated worldwide as an ornamental plant and in the production of essences. The leaves of the rose plant consist of 5-7 small leaflets arranged opposite each other. The leaflets are oval, the edges are toothed and the upper surface is bright green in colour. Rose flowers are intensely fragrant and usually pink in colour, but can vary in shades from white to deep red. The flowers have 5 petals and a densely layered structure. The part below the petals has many stamens. The stem of the rose plant is erect and branched and is generally known for its thorny structure. These thorns help protect the plant and give it a characteristic appearance.

The fruits of the rose plant are swollen and fleshy, usually orange-red in colour. These fruits are not used in the production of rose oil and rose water, but some varieties are edible and rich in vitamin C. Rose prefers sunny and well-drained soils. Grown in temperate climates, this plant thrives best in slightly acidic soils rich in organic matter. The rose plant remains healthy and productive for many years with regular watering and pruning.
