Saw Palmetto (Serenoa serrulata), native to the southeastern coast of North America, especially in Florida is a widespread, dwarf and perennial palm species. It grows in sunny sandy soils, bushy areas and forest clearings. It is known for its resistance to drought and saline soils.

Leaves: Fan-shaped and serrated. They are dark green in colour and each leaf can be 50-100 cm long. The edges of the leaves are thorny.

Unpretentious Flowers and Fruits: In spring, a long flower stalk emerges from the centre of the plant with clusters of small white flowers. These flowers ripen in autumn and turn into dark blue-black, olive-sized fruits.

Slow Growing and Shrub Form: The Saw Palmetto is a slow-growing plant.

It can reach 4 metres in height. Since it has many trunks, it grows in shrub form and can spread over a large area.

Resilience: It is highly resistant to drought, saline soils and even fires. This feature makes it a valuable plant that can grow in coastal areas and in harsh environmental conditions.

Major Active Ingredients and Proportions

The fruits of the Saw Palmetto (Serenoa repens) plant contain many beneficial bioactive compounds and thanks to these properties are used to make various health products. The fruit is widely processed to produce extracts used especially for men's health.

1.Fatty acids: Saw Palmetto fruits contain fatty acids that make up about 12-18% of its total weight. These fatty acids include lauric acid, oleic acid, myristic acid and palmitic acid.

2.Phytosterols: These constituents make up about 0.2-0.4% of the dry weight of the fruit. Phytosterols such as beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol have positive effects on prostate health.

3.Essential oils: Fruits contain 0.1-0.3% of their total weight in essential oils. These essential oils show anti-inflammatory and antimicrobial properties.

Other Important Molecules

- Phytocholesterols (0.2-0.4%): Beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol

- Essential Oil Components (0.1-0.3%):

  - α-pinene (10-20%)

  - β-pinene (5-10%)

  - Limonene (2-5%)

  - Linalool (1-3%)

  - Myrcene (1-2%)

These components provide Saw Palmetto to be effective on a variety of health effects, especially prostate health and the management of hair loss. For example, phytosterols can reduce prostate enlargement and hair loss by regulating hormonal imbalances, while essential oils exhibit natural anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.
