Spirulina platensis is not actually a plant, but a microalgae belonging to the group of photosynthetic bacteria known as cyanobacteria. Spirally shaped and blue-green in colour, this microalgae is too small to be seen with the naked eye due to its single-celled structure, but its spiral shape and characteristic colours can be easily distinguished by microscopic examination.

Spirulina grows naturally in warm, alkaline and nutrient-rich freshwater lakes and produces its own food through photosynthesis. Although it is similar to plants in this respect, it is botanically classified as algae and this self-sufficient aquatic organism gets its bright blue-green colour from the chlorophyll and phycocyanin pigments it contains. These pigments increase the efficiency of the photosynthesis process by enabling it to utilise sunlight more effectively. Spirulina is valued worldwide as a health and food supplement and can be grown in many different environments thanks to its wide adaptability.

Major Active Ingredients and Proportions

Spirulina platensis is a microalgae known for its high nutritional value. It contains 60-70% high-quality proteins, including all essential amino acids. Phycocyanin (10-15%), an important component of Spirulina, gives this microalgae its characteristic blue-green colour and is known for its powerful antioxidant properties.  Furthermore, Spirulina contains valuable nutritional components such as beta-carotene (0.5-1.5%), vitamin E (0.1-0.3%) and gamma-linolenic acid (GLA) (1-2%); GLA is particularly noted for its anti-inflammatory effects.

Other Molecules:

- B vitamins (B1, B2, B6, B12) (1-3%): Supports energy metabolism.

- Vitamin K (0.2-0.5%): Important for bone health and blood clotting.

- Minerals: With iron (0.5-1%), magnesium (0.4-0.8%), potassium (1-2%), Spirulina is a rich source of various trace elements and minerals.

This rich ingredient profile makes Spirulina a particularly valuable supplement for vegan and vegetarian diets. Packed with antioxidants, vitamins and minerals, this superfood has immune-boosting and inflammation-reducing properties while helping to support overall health.
