It is a perennial herbaceous plant about 40-60 cm tall. The plant leaves in spring, blooms in summer, dries in autumn and the above-ground part of the plant is not visible in winter and turns green again in spring. It naturally spreads in moist stream beds, field edges, pastures and meadows. St. John's wort plant is distinguished from other St. John's wort species by its leaves and flowers.
Compounds such as hypericin and pseudohypericin are the characteristic components of the plant constituting 0.05-0.3%. In addition, the plant contains 0.9-5.0% of hyperforin and adhyperforin and about 4% of various flavonoid derivative compounds.
