Capsicum annuum (Chilli Pepper or Sweet and Chilli Pepper) contains a number of active ingredients that support various uses of the plant. Chilli peppers are rich in capsaicinoids, the most common of which are capsaicin (0.1-1%) and dihydrocapsaicin (0.05-0.5%). Other capsaicinoids such as nordihydrocapsaicin, homocapsaicin and homodihydrocapsaicin are also present. These compounds provide the characteristic bitterness of chillies and have various health benefits.

In particular, it contains high amounts of vitamin C (ascorbic acid, 0.05-0.2%) and vitamin A (retinol equivalent, 0.01-0.05%), as well as carotenoids and flavonoids. Carotenoids include capsanthin, capsorubin, lutein and zeaxanthin (0.05-0.2%); flavonoids include quercetin and luteolin (0.01-0.1%). These components increase the antioxidant, anti-inflammatory and immune supportive properties of chilli.
