It is a fruit tree from the Citrus family (Rutaceae) and is known as Orange. Citrus sinensis is a tree that can reach an average height of 5-8 metres. The trees bloom white and/or pink flowers and then bear orange coloured fruits. The Orange is very rich in vitamin C. Citrus sinensis is also used to produce an essential oil called orange oil. This oil is used in various fields such as aromatherapy, skin care and house cleaning.
It has essential oils, carotenoids, pectin, flavonoids and excellent antioxidants. In addition, C. sinensis peel is a rich source of vitamin C, as well as fibre and many nutrients, including phenolics and flavonoids. It is divided into two main parts, the epicarp and mesocarp. The epicarp is the coloured peripheral surface consisting largely of parenchymatous cells and cuticle. It is covered by an epicuticular waxy epidermis with many small aromatic sebaceous glands that give it its distinctive odour.
