Myrtle plant is known as "murt" in our country. It is an evergreen, perennial plant that forms white or purple fruits in autumn. The leaves and fruits of the plant stand out with their unique odour.
Myrtle (Myrtus communis L.) is an aromatic evergreen shrub that grows mainly in the Mediterranean climate and has a fragrant essential oil. Containing various bioactive molecules such as polyphenols, anthocyanins, polyphenolic acids and flavonoids, myrtle has antioxidant and antimicrobial activities.
Leaves contain 1-2% essential oil. The essential oil contains α-pinene (12.2-60.4%), 1,8-cineole (6.2-27.3%), limonene (1.4-26.7%), linalool (0.7-21.0%), myrtenyl acetate (0-29.1%), and geraniol (0.3-8.3%).
