Aronia plant is in the Aronia genus of Rosaceae family. Aronia (Aronia melanocarpa), native to North America, is a berry. Due to its potential for use in the health sector, it was brought to Russia through Germany in the early 1900s and started to be cultivated. Large-scale production of Aronia has been carried out in Russia since the 1940s. Today it is widely cultivated in Eastern Europe and Germany. Aronia is a woody, perennial, shrub-shaped and long-lived species. Plant height is about 2 meters. Aronia fruit size varies between 5-14 mm and weight 0.5-2 g.
Aronia fruit contains a very high amount of anthocyanin and flavonoid compounds. In addition; It is also rich in antioxidants, phenols, minerals and vitamins. It has the highest value compared to other berry fruits in terms of antioxidant capacity and anthocyanin content of its fruits. It contains high amount of vitamin C. There are approximately 1-1.5 g of protein, 4.1-4.6 g of fiber, 10.9-11.2 g of carbohydrates and 78.6-80.5 g of water in 100 grams of Aronia plant. Important active ingredients in aronia extract: epicatechin, chlorogenic acid, neochlorogenic acid and cyanidin-3-galactoside molecules.
